Five seminary students came to hear the famed Charles Spurgeon preach. While waiting to enter, they were greeted by a man who wanted to give them a tour of the power plant of the church. The young men followed the man downstairs. A door was quietly opened, and their guide whispered, "This is our power plant." Surprised, the students saw 700 people bowed in prayer, seeking a blessing on the preaching service. Their guide was none other than Spurgeon. (Our Daily Bread)

Christopher Peebles woke up to feel his dog Laney repeatedly biting his foot. The youth was sleeping in the basement of his home with two friends. "I thought she had to go to the bathroom, but she never bites me," the teen later admitted. When he walked upstairs to let Laney out, he noticed the smoke. A short circuit in the garage started a fire. Quickly the boys exited with the dog to safety. Laney had saved their lives! (AP)

Fred casually mentioned to his pastor that he stole a hammer from the steel mill where he worked. His pastor reminded Fred that theft at this particular mill was costing the company over $50,000 a year. "To make up for that loss," his pastor noted, "the factory raised the price of steel. Consequently, everyone who buys something made from that steel pays for your hammer. You just didn't hurt the company," his pastor assured him, "you hurt everybody in this city." (Don Newhouse)

1Jehoshaphat died, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. His son Jehoram became king in his place.
2Jehoram' s brothers were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of King Jehoshaphat of Israel.
3Their father gave them many gifts of silver, gold, and things of much worth. He gave them strong cities in Judah. But he made Jehoram king, because he was the first-born.
4Now when Jehoram had become king in the place of his father, and had made himself strong, he killed all his brothers with the sword. He killed some of the leaders of Israel also.
5Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king. And he ruled for eight years in Jerusalem.
6He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as those of Ahab' s house did. (For Ahab' s daughter was his wife.) He did what was sinful in the eyes of the Lord.

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11
Has your spiritual life become cold towards God? Perhaps too much of your focus is on things of this life. Consider the words of Jim Elliot, a missionary, who became a martyr in Ecuador: "Am I ignitable" God deliver me from the dread asbestos of 'other things.' Saturate me with the oil of the Spirit that I may be aflame. But flame is transient, often short-lived. Canst thou bear this, my soul - short life? In me there dwells the Spirit of the Great Short-lived, whose zeal for God's house consumed Him. 'Make me Thy fuel, Flame of God!'" (True Discipleship)

Amaziah Rules Judah
1Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king. And he ruled for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother' s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
2Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not with a whole heart.
3As soon as the nation was under his rule, he killed his servants who had killed his father the king.
4But he did not kill their children. He did what is written in the Law in the book of Moses. The Lord had said in this Law, " Fathers must not be put to death for the children. And children must not be put to death for the fathers. Each must be put to death for his own sin."
The War Against Edom
5Then Amaziah gathered the men of Judah together. He put them, by their fathers' houses, under the rule of captains of thousands and of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He numbered those who were twenty years old and older. And he found that they were 300,000 chosen men, able to go to wa...[more details]

Perfect love drives out fear. I John 4:18
John tucked his four-year-old son, Jason, in for the night. A few minutes later John noticed a light shining from the child's room. "Son, why are you turning on the lights after I leave?" asked the puzzled parent. "I am afraid," confessed the tyke. John patiently consoled the boy, letting him know that Jesus was with him and there was nothing to fear. Getting ready to leave, John asked if he could turn off the lights. "OK, Dad," the child replied, "but can you leave the light on in the closet?" (Steve Klipowicz)
Do you have personal fears and anxieties haunting you? Let God's love chase away the shadows. When you realize He is with you, dark fears will disappear in the glow of His presence. Don't be afraid. Let Jesus be your night light!
Point of Connection: O Christ, who hast known no fear, be with all who are afraid today. (Unknown)

Ahaz Rules Judah
1Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king. And he ruled for sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done.
2But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He also made objects to look like the false gods of Baal.
3He burned special perfume in the valley of Ben-Hinnom. And he burned his sons in fire, following the hated ways of the nations whom the Lord had driven out before the sons of Israel.
4He gave gifts in worship and burned special perfume on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.
Syria And Israel Win Over Judah

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. John 10:9 KJV
Richard Blackaby and his wife arrived at a framing shop ten minutes before it opened. They paced back and forth in the frigid air. At one point the store manage saw them, waved, and went back to work. The couple became frustrated at having to wait outside while the manager was warm inside. Finally Richard asked his wife, "Did you try the door?" After a long silence, the two of them went to the door, finding it had been unlocked the entire time. (Doy Cave)

Sennacherib Speaks Against The Lord
1After these faithful acts, King Sennacherib of Assyria came to fight against Judah. His army gathered around the strong cities. He thought he would take them for himself.
2When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come to fight against Jerusalem,
3he planned with his captains and men of war to stop the water from the wells which were outside the city. And they helped him.
4Many people were gathered, and they stopped all the wells and the small river which flowed through the land. They said, " Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?"
5Then Hezekiah took strength of heart and built again all of the wall that had been broken down. He built towers on it, and built another outside wall. He made the Millo strong in the city of David. And he made many battle-coverings and objects to fight with.

Professor Anthony Campolo once ministered at a Christian youth camp. One of the adolescent campers had spastic paralysis. The other boys often mocked him. One night his cabin group cruelly chose him to lead the camp devotions. Unashamedly the spastic boy stood up, and in his strained, slurred manner simply said, "Jesus loves me - and I love Jesus!" That was all that was needed. Conviction fell upon those youth and revival gripped the camp. Years later, Campolo still meets men who came to Christ because of that boy's testimony. (Anthony Campolo)

It was hard work trying to clean the beaters and other parts. The next night the owner showed Ernie an alternative way of cleaning out the old flavor. And I thought of fallen comrades, I had known so long ago.
They came from every city across this fertile land.
That we might live in freedom, they lie here 'neath the sand.
I felt a little guilty, my sacrifice was small. I only lost a little time, but these men lost their all. Now the services are over, for this Memorial Day. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' Acts 20:35
Erin Oquindo received 99 pairs of shoes and 154 pairs of socks last year for her 9th birthday. All of which she promptly gave away. "It makes me happy," Erin said. "It honors God and what He did for us. I think He feels happy too." (Baptist Press)
